-  Statement by The Complainants for the Criminal Prosecution of the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster on the joint legal action -   11th June 2012:-

Today, we are bringing a lawsuit against those responsible for the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster at the Fukushima District Public Prosecutors’ Office.

Our ordinary but happy lives have been completely ruined and our human rights profoundly violated since the nuclear accident. United through our experience, we are joining forces here today to voice our collective anger.

It has required great courage on our part to take this step to press criminal charges. To accuse someone of wrong-doing makes us reflect on the way we live our lives too. This action will have an enormous significance. This process will -

· Question this society where people are not valued equally and where some people are sacrificed for the gains of others
· Help us rebuild personal and community relationships torn apart by the disaster, and help us expand our supportive networks
· Enable us to reclaim our strength and dignity

Only by going down this path, we can fulfil our obligations to our children and all young people. Each one of us must stand by all the people and living things around us and act to change the world for the better. We have to resist those who divide us, grow stronger by being united and be unflinching in holding to account those responsible for the accident.

Speakers (subject to change):
MUTOH Ruiko:  Representative of The Complainants for Criminal Prosecution of the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster
Born 1953 in Fukushima.  While working as a teacher at a school for disabled children, she became an anti-nuclear activist after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.  After retiring as a teacher, she opened a small café but was forced to close it down after the nuclear disaster at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

KAIDO Yuhichi:  Attorney (Lawyer) for The Complainants for Criminal Prosecution of the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster

Statement:
In relation to the release of contaminated water into the environment at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, three representatives of The Complainants for Criminal Prosecution of the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster has pressed charges against 32 former and current executives of Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and TEPCO as a corporation on September 3, 2013 based on Act for the Punishment of Environmental Pollution Crimes relating to Human Health.  The three accusers believe TEPCO has committed a crime by failing to respond properly to the nuclear accident ever since the 3.11 meltdown at Fukushima Daiichi, which led to the release of a huge amount of water contaminated with radioactive substances into the ocean.  Fukushima Prefectural Police accepted the accusation on October 11, 2013.  On December 18, some 5,000 accusers newly joined this move to press charges against TEPCO. They are now prepared to call on Fukushima Prefectural Police to immediately begin criminal investigation (on-site verification and seizure of evidential documents) on TEPCO.

List of the names of 6,000 accusers will be submitted to Fukushima Prefectural Police on December 18 (Wednesday) as follows:

9:40   Members will meet in front of Nishi-chosha (West building) of Fukushima
       Prefectural Government.

10:00   Submission of letter of attorney to Fukushima Prefectural Police
